Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive, and may even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours per day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet, they also make loving companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which could be disruptive to those living in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care
For years activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale, which died on Friday as a result of what was thought to be a kidney problem.
